New Web Sites

hen a computer trade publication noted that the White House site on the Internet’s World Wide Web (or “Web”) had 1.25 million “hits” in its first six months — and that “If you can beat that, you’re onto a winner” — those creating new web sites took note. And, since then, numerous other institutions, including the Vatican, have sought to create even more popular new destinations on the Internet.
But the Church of Scientology’s sites on the Web marked the end of the second month following their eye-catching debut by celebrating a cyberspace milestone: 3.8 million hits in less than three months. By the end of six months, the hits had soared to 8 million and by January 1998, 21 months after the first three sites opened, passed the 43 million mark.
Collectively known as the Global Scientology Information Center, the sites enjoy a growing popularity which is not confined to casual surfers. No less than 50 awards have been presented to the sites in the first nine months of 1997 — a total of 90 to date.
The response by casual browsers of every description to the three original sites — on Dianetics, Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard — has been enthusiastic, so much so that more than 80 additional sites were added in response to the demand, in English and four major foreign languages.
The best way to get an idea of what these sites are about is to log on and see for yourself. Once logged on, the visitor can select his language of choice — including not only English, but Spanish, French, German and Italian as well — by selecting the appropriate flag. As part of the largest multimedia presence on the Web, users can get virtually all of their questions about the Church of Scientology answered while enjoying a broad range of unique features, such as an interactive view “inside” the human mind.
Not content with using the most state-of-the-art technology in its development of the sites, Scientologists have continued to enhance the quality as new technology becomes available.
