The Criminon Program

fficially established in 1972 in New Zealand, Criminon’s published mission statement is:
* To eliminate those factors which produce and precipitate criminal behavior.
* To restore common-sense moral values.
* To provide educational tools and life skills to those in need so that they may rejoin society as responsible and contributing members.
* To assist the criminal justice system to bring about reforms that will help accomplish these aims.
Criminon runs three types of programs:
I. The largest is the correspondence course method in which thousands of inmates from 1,400 prisons in the United States alone have their lessons graded through the mail by trained Criminon volunteers. It is a grassroots program, with inmates telling others and spreading the word as they are moved from one prison to another.
II. On-site programs, which are run one-on-one with the inmates. This approach was first used in Los Angeles Juvenile Hall, where the program graduated hundreds of juvenile offenders.
The on-site programs can deliver everything from one course up to the maximum Criminon lineup of eight courses and the Narconon drug rehabilitation program.
The full lineup includes:
2. A course to improve communication skills;
3. The Hubbard drug detoxification method to eliminate drug residues from the body which can prompt addicts to relapse when not removed;
4. A series of study courses, starting with one that teaches inmates how to study and learn, so they can, among other things, learn trades and hold down jobs;
5. The Way to Happiness course to provide them with a common-sense moral code they need to live an honest life;
6. A course that teaches inmates how to recognize and stand up to people who don’t have their best interests at heart;
7. A course on how to maintain their personal integrity;
8. And lastly, a course that provides them with fundamental tools to change or improve conditions in any given situation they encounter in their lives.
III. Criminon Community Education Centers provide crime prevention education and also deliver the Criminon courses to people from community-based programs, probation and parole departments and schools. They have been a resource in various locations for courts wanting an alternative sentencing program.
