Sedation
When informed of psychiatrist Sadeq’s remarks, Sayyid Muhammad Syeed, Ph.D., secretary general of the Islamic Society of North America, condemned them as “more explosive than a suicide bomber.” Terrorist acts, Syeed said, are directly contrary to Islam, while suicide itself is both “the ultimate debasement of human dignity” and “the ultimate sin.”
Syeed told Freedom that if a Muslim is known to have died from suicide, and not from natural causes or by accident, according to Islamic law, he or she faces eternal damnation and the usual funeral rituals cannot be performed.
The instinct for self-preservation is natural to all life, he noted. If one urges a horse on the brink of a cliff to step forward, he will not do so. Instead, the animal will want to move back; he knows instinctively that to go forward can cause death.
Human beings, Syeed said, have the same urge for survival, made even stronger by their far greater intelligence. Suicide bombings defy this. People, he said, are willfully destroying themselves and others, “which means that the human mind has been manipulated to an extent where this basic human and animal instinct is being sedated in some way.” (See “True Islamic Teachings vs. Psycho-Terror Fiction.”)
“It’s a Long Process to Brainwash Them”
Syeed’s use of the word “sedated” reverberates with truth as powerful psychiatric drugs have emerged as instruments of terrorist operations.
The ubiquity of coercive psychiatric methods within terrorist camps may come as a surprise to many. Invariably, such means are shrouded under layers of intrigue.
Freedom’s research revealed that these techniques induce Middle Eastern youth—mostly, experts say, those with a weak grasp of Islamic theology—to turn their backs on their religion’s positive ideals and values. This sets them up for transformation into unthinking tools of their psychiatric masters—clever men who would never consider becoming suicide bombers themselves.
In lockstep with their terror masters, their illusion of jihad then justifies the slaughter of innocent noncombatants, an action proscribed by Islamic law—"the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) forbade the killing of women and children.”11
Since Freedom broached the psycho-terrorism subject in early 2002, mounting evidence has pointed to drug use as a pivotal factor in the making of today’s violent terror agents. (See “Drugs for Terror”.) In March 2004, for example, journalist James Hider of The Times (London) revealed that al-Qaeda has been drugging and brainwashing young men to create suicide bombers in Iraq.12
Colonel Karim Sultan, police chief of the holy city of Karbala, south of Baghdad, said, “It’s a long process to brainwash them. They seduce them with money, then start to use drugs on them until they are half-conscious.”13
Karbala endured attacks from as many as nine suicide bombers on March 2, 2004. The violence, which killed 112, could have been even worse, had not Sultan’s officers nabbed 12 men around that time in outlying villages—a number of them reportedly drugged, brainwashed and “ready to act.”14
In an interview with Freedom, Sultan said that suicide bombers in Iraq have originated from Saudi Arabia, Syria, Morocco and Afghanistan.
He noted that while drugs constitute one aspect of the suicide attacks he has investigated, another element has surfaced—one that shows the treachery of those who send others to their deaths. Sultan described instances in which proclaimed “suicide bombings” are, in fact, nothing of the sort. Rather they are calculated murders of not only the victims, but the apparent—and reported—"martyr,” who had no idea he was going to die.
“They tempt the guy to take the car and put it someplace [wherever the target site may be],” Sultan said. “And then they detonate it remotely while he is in it.”
Fine-Tuning a Dark Art
As Freedom previously disclosed, terrorist training camps have long existed in Iran, whose border lies a mere two-hour drive from Karbala. There, drugs and other behavior modification methods are reportedly used.15
According to Freedom sources, psychiatrist Aziz al-Abub, a known expert in behavior modification and torture through the use of drugs, was most recently reported to be in Iran, where he has been variously associated with the intelligence service of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the nation’s prison system.
Al-Abub, who received his training from KGB doctors at Moscow’s Patrice Lumumba University*, demonstrated the use of drugs to create bombers as far back as October 23, 1983, when he programmed the men who destroyed the U.S. Marine barracks and the French headquarters in Beirut, killing 303. Over the subsequent two decades, psycho-warfare experts assume he has fine-tuned his dark art and trained a cadre of accomplices in it.
In either the prison system or the IRGC, al-Abub has access to, and control of, many potential terror “recruits” upon whom to work—particularly in light of the IRGC’s recent call for the establishment of a corps of 10,000 suicide bombers.
Conveniently, the porous Iran-Iraq border stretches for hundreds of miles, prompting a Freedom source involved in the effort to rebuild Iraq to say that al-Abub is “in a perfect position to use his drugs and other mental weapons to create suicide bombers for use in Iraq.”
Evidence of such an Iranian beef-up of terror troops exists. In May 2004, the IRGC’s intel service established a facility “to train suicide attackers throughout the world,” dubbed the World Islamic Martyrs and Fighters Staff Headquarters.16 The following month, according to Middle East Newsline, Iran hosted a conference in Teheran on the subject of suicide bombing that included representatives of various terrorist groups.17
Yossef Bodansky, former director of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare and author of The Secret History of the Iraq War, told Freedom, “For the Iranians, it has been very important to make sure that each and every operation is a success, and they are therefore willing to bolster zeal with chemicals.”

FRANTZ FANON:
Much of today’s terrorist rhetoric traces to Fanon, who trained in France and became a psychiatrist. He was a key influence in the Algerian revolt against French colonists and in subsequent violent conflicts on three continents. He declared that colonists established a condition wherein no language exists other than violence, which he characterized as “a purifying force.”
Achieving freedom requires carrying out acts of violence, Fanon claimed. It matters not if the violence is successful, he said, only that the cause is celebrated and publicized. Fanon held any foreigner in the Third World to be a target for terrorism – no matter their status – since, in his view, rulers have waived their political rights and privileges. |

AZIZ AL-ABUB:
The psychiatrist behind the prolonged torture and murder of CIA Beirut station chief Bill Buckley in 1984 and 1985, al-Abub studied “brainwashing” methods at Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow. Al-Abub learned the KGB’s pharmacological techniques for “keeping a person passive over a lengthy period and reducing the will to resist.” He also had close associations with psychiatrists in the Soviet psychiatric “gulags” where religious minorities and political dissidents were detained. Al-Abub provided “pep pills” for suicide bombers and implanted them with the idea of the glory of sacrifice and dying. His greater target was to create tension in the streets through terrorism.

Egyptian psychologist Ali A. Mohamed, a top al-Qaeda leader and trainer, pleaded guilty in a United States court for his involvement in the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in August 1998—acts that killed 224 people and injured thousands. He remains in prison.

Chairman of the Arab Psychiatric Association and head of the Department of Psychiatry at Cairo’s Ein Shams University, he goaded viewers to become suicide bombers in an April 2002 interview broadcast on the Arab Radio and Television Network, stating, “As a professional psychiatrist, I say that the height of bliss comes with the end of the countdown: ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. And then, you press the button to blow yourself up.... It is a transition to another, more beautiful world.”
