Narconon: A Workable Program

 T
he Narconon program is based on the research and writings of humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard. In addition to ridding the body of all traces of drugs, the program addresses and handles the reasons an individual started using drugs in the first place. It then arms him with the knowledge and certainty he needs to lead a happy, productive and drug-free life.

Drug withdrawal is the first step, carried out, in 99% of the cases, with simple procedures to help the addict to keep his attention extroverted on his environment and to remain in control of his cravings — all under close medical and staff supervision, and without the use of drugs. Exceptions include those with long-term, severe addiction to alcohol for which potential of seizures during withdrawals necessitates a medical detoxification be done instead at a hospital.

After withdrawal, participants engage in a series of exercises designed to increase the ability to confront and enter into communication with others, their environment and situations they encounter in life, instead of retreating from them.

Next comes a supervised regimen in which drug residues lodged in the body — the reason former addicts tend to physically crave more drugs — are dislodged through sauna sweat-out, combined with exercise and a strict course of nutritional supplements and plenty of rest and healthy food.

As those who complete have repeatedly attested, the sauna detoxification step also results in increased mental clarity and a resurgence of energy and vitality.

Participants follow with courses of study and individual counseling which isolate the reasons they turned to drugs in the first place, and which arm them with the practical skills and a fundamental grasp of morals and ethics that enable them to keep in control of their own lives, and to pick themselves up should they start to fall again.

Before leaving Narconon, each program graduate, together with a counselor, develops an individually tailored, extended follow-up program which addresses any problems they will face when they return home. Thus armed, the graduates return to society to make their own way as contributing members for life.
